Website Transfer

Do you need to shift your site from another server to ours? Concerned that you might miss something?

There are a number of things you need to consider before making the shift. Most items below relate to WordPress sites.

  • Do you have a full backup of the current site? If in html it should be downloaded to your computer.
  • If in WordPress, make sure you export the xml file and also do a backup of the data for safe keeping.
  • How many email addresses do you currently have active? These don’t automatically transfer over, they have to be recreated. Take a note of each one.
  • Download all images if you don’t have backup copies of these. Occasionally they don’t transfer across properly in exports or backups.
  • Make sure you keep a copy of the css file.
  • Keep a copy of the theme you are using, including all the modifications that have been made.
  • Download all the plugins you were using.
  • If using a special theme, i.e. Genesis for example, take note of any settings for sliders, or other tools used for the site.
  • Allow time for the transfer to take place. It can take 24-48 hours for a domain name to redelegate to the new server.
  • Change the DNS settings for your domain from the old server to the new server.
  • Install WordPress if that is your program of choice and reinstall the theme and plugins.
  • Reupload the theme folder and the css file.
  • Reupload the plugin folders and files.
  • Re set up email addresses and any forwarders as per previous set up.

Site should now be live and visible on the new server.  Your visitors won’t notice the change at all.
